Websites

Website is a necessity

Website is a necessity, and often the very first or the second point of contact with your new customers or other business partners. It is almost a proof of your existence. And it is your “digital face” – smiling (or frowning) at visitors, and interacting with them 24/7, even while you are asleep.

The DIY vs. outsourcing dilemma

The basic dilemma that all businesses face, be a start-up or a multinational, is to what degree they should control their own “digital face” and to what extent they should let professionals design and dress their “face”, or even pull faces and interact with their customers.

It is not unlike a dilemma about any other channel of communication. You could be answering your phone calls, or you could let somebody else handle the calls 24/7, perhaps even from the other side of the world.

The small business’ dilemma

For small and self-funded start-ups, it is often tempting to go down the DIY route, money being the main constraint. And it also sounds simple enough. However, they could quickly end up with a site built over several months that has costed much more than initially thought due to various add-ons, and that is now in a dead-end. As, for example, they would need to invest an excruciating additional amount on top to sell to EU customers while complying with all the regulations. And after so much hard work put in, they can’t even migrate the existing site to another platform.

But it might also work very well for a business that simply needs a “business card” on the web. E.g. if you are a local, one-man-band roof tiler, this might do. However, in that case, you should still control your digital presence, manage online reviews outside your website etc.

Assess the critical technical and creative skills and the expertise needed

To make your website a success you will need a mix of technical as well as creative skills and expertise. On the technical side, computer literacy and regulatory knowledge are an obvious necessity, and on the creative side you will need skills such as graphic design, copywriting, online marketing and PR. You could asses which of those skills are the most important for your website (depending on the nature of your business) and how strong you are in those skills.

Below are a few examples of such an assessment for a one-man-band local services provider, for a local bakery, and for a small crafts maker selling globally through an online shop.

A local service provider

A bakery

A small online shop

Legend of critical website skills & expertise: GR = Graphic design, CW = copywriting, LE = legal, IT = IT, MK = Marketing, PR = Public relations

As an example, a bakery will need a good graphic design; their website should display mouth-watering imagery with exquisitely written, hunger-inspiring text to go along. So, as graphic design is very important for their site while they are likely not to have an internal graphic designer, they are more likely to outsource that part of their website. On the other hand, they are unlikely to have an online shop and technical skills required may not be very high – so they might go along the DIY route in setting up their website and designing the content, in case they happen to have an adequate and eager internal resource.

What about VAT, banking fees and accounting costs?

Many taking the DIY route underestimate the time and costs that will need to be spent to meet relevant regulations and to make their website an integral part of their business, and economical (which includes not paying unnecessary fees to payment gates providers and creating unnecessary work for their accounting). Among the issues that need addressing are:

  • EU cookie law,
  • EU VAT, potential VAT Mini One Stop Shop registration (see MOSS),
  • Chief Information Officer (CIO) registration,
  • Selecting the best payment solutions,
  • How reports of any online transactions are going to be transferred to your accounting system (and how much bookkeeping will cost you).

Searching for the best solution for each of those issues, and actually finding one that is both quality and cost-effective, for each issue listed, can take a very long time. And trials can also be costly, as one can easily end up paying fees to try unsuitable products, and it also takes a dear toll on time-to-market.
